Mission Accomplished For Coates With Maiden Clio Top Three

1 Mins read

Max Coates says he achieved everything he aimed to at Oulton Park last weekend as a maiden overall podium finish moved him into the top five of the Renault UK Clio Cup standings.

Having impressed over the opening three meetings of the season with four Graduate Cup wins and two outright fourth place finishes, the podium was the next milestone for the Yorkshireman.

Qualifying in fifth position for both races put him right in contention, and after holding the position at the start of race one, Coates seized his opportunity at the Island hairpin on lap five.

Two drivers coming to blows in front opened the door and Coates slotted his Ciceley Motorsport Clio down the inside to take a third place that he held to the finish.

The former BTCC racer backed it up with another strong drive in race two, recovering from a slow start to climb from eighth to fifth – his fifth top six finish so far this season.

“It’s been a fantastic weekend in front of a massive crowd,” said Coates.

“Before the weekend my aim was to get a first podium and move into fifth in the championship and we’ve done just that, as well as closing in on third and fourth place.

“It’s given me massive confidence going into my home round at Croft.”
