Despite missing out on his maiden GP2 Series victory once more, Pierre Gasly was happy to finish second around the streets of Baku on Sunday, especially after starting the Sprint race down in eighteenth position.

The Red Bull-backed Prema Racing driver was on course for his maiden victory until team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi found a way passed the Frenchman on the final lap after Gasly made a small mistake heading into turn one.

“It was a crazy race starting from P18 and finishing in P2 was unbelievable with a lot of action and overtaking to the race and it was really good to drive,” said Gasly, who had retired on the first lap of the Feature race on Saturday after getting involved in the first corner chaos.

“In the end, I was leading in the last few laps after being a little opportunist with the safety-car and all that happened on track. I was struggling with my tires because I was pushing really hard at the beginning.

“I had a great fight with Antonio but unfortunately in the last lap I locked up at the first corner so Antonio managed to overtake me. Of course I’m a bit disappointed for the last lap but looking to where we started at the beginning it’s incredible to finish on the podium and I’m really happy.”
