Max Coates says he has exceeded all expectations after securing a top three championship finish in his maiden Renault UK Clio Cup campaign.
Fresh from winning the Graduates Cup honours at Silverstone last time out, Coates headed into the season finale at Brands Hatch last weekend battling with Paul Rivett for third overall.
The meeting didn’t get off to an ideal start for the Yorkshireman, who could only qualifying his Ciceley Motorsport Clio tenth and eighth on the grid for the two races.
Coates battled through to sixth place in tricky conditions in the opener, but would push even further forwards during a dramatic live televised season finale.
After an early safety car period, Coates would benefit from an incident ahead that crucially included Rivett to settle into third position in his Primex Plastics and PLASgran Recycling-backed machine.
Coates would then pull off an impressive overtake to secure second position, which he held to the chequered flag for his seventh outright podium finish of the campaign.
That result, coupled with Rivett’s troubles, meant the 22 year old would take third in the standings by just a single point to cap off a hugely impressive first season in the series.
Coates said: “It has been a sensational year, I’ve achieved far more than I could have imagined was possible at the start of the season and to end like this is amazing.
“We have challenged the established front runners in this championship and beaten a multi champion too, I couldn’t be happier.”
