Alex Lynn was delighted to end his final season in the GP2 Series with victory in Sunday’s Sprint race at the Yas Marina Circuit, with the Briton capitalising on pole position after finishing eighth in the final Feature race of 2016.
The DAMS driver was on course for a much better result on Saturday before a slow pit stop cost him some time, which ultimately left him in eighth, but with some overnight changes to his car, Lynn took a dominant victory on Sunday ahead of Johnny Cecotto Jr and Sergey Sirotkin.
Lynn has long since admitted that 2016 would be his final year in GP2, and the former GP3 Series champion felt it was the perfect way to exit the championship.
“It’s great to finish the weekend – and the season – on such a nice high,” said Lynn. “I think I was on for a solid fifth or sixth in the Feature Race, but lost quite a bit of time in the final part of the medium-tyre stint and then also with the unfortunate wheelnut problem at the pit stop.
“But P8 gave me pole for the Sprint Race. The team made a lot of improvements to the car overnight and things just went fantastically in the race. It’s a great way to end the season.”
