Aaron Thompson is the latest exciting new talent to join the Renault UK Clio Cup grid for 2017, linking up with reigning series champions JamSport Racing.
The 17 year old heads to the BTCC support package following two successful seasons in Ford Fiesta competition with the JamSport squad.
After winning the Junior Fiesta crown in 2015, the third-generation racer narrowly missed out on the senior title at the first attempt last year.
“The vast majority of people are of course paying to come through the gates to see the BTCC but the UK Clio Cup is the one they come to watch as well – it is that good,” said Thompson.
“The new season is only just over a month away and I’m feeling relaxed but also like a child on Christmas Eve at the same time!
“I tested the UK Clio Cup car for the first time last week at Snetterton and I have to be honest – it felt like I’d gone from glorified track car to real racing car. It’s probably one of the best cars you can ever drive.”
Thompson is JamSport’s second confirmed Clio Cup debutant for the 2017 campaign, joining MINI Challenge graduate Nathan Harrison at the Northampton-based outfit.
“We’ve worked with Aaron for a couple of years and we’re chuffed to bits to get him into our Clio line-up – he is a real class act, in and out of the car, and it’s ridiculous to think he’s still only 17,” added JamSport principal Jamie Going.
“He’s a shining example of the ‘academy’ of young talent we have coming through our doors at JamSport and we are confident he and Nathan will work very well together.
“We also look forward to announcing the rest of our UK Clio Cup driver line-up in the near future when there could be another surprise in store.”
