Patrick Pasma claimed pole for the first British Formula 4 race at Snetterton ahead of early pace setter Ayrton Simmons.
Simmons jumped to the top of the times after the first round of laps before later improving with a lap time of 1:52.449.
Championship leader Kiren Jewiss, who was running second, had set the best first sector time of the session when Hampus Ericsson stopped on track, bringing out the red flag.
After a brief clean up period, the cars returned to the track with just over 10 minutes on the clock.
Times tumbled in the second half of the session, with Paavo Tonteri, Jewiss, and Simmons all swapping times at the top of the order, before Pasma went around the Snetterton circuit in just 1:51.266, just 0.009s faster than Simmons.
Dennis Hauger, the fastest rookie, took third overall ahead of Jewiss and Jack Doohan.
Jonathan Hoggard claimed sixth, ahead of Tonteri and Sebastian Priaulx, with Manuel Sulaiman and Sebastian Alvarez completing the top 10.
