Marcus Grönholm took the win in the Legends race, held as part of the All Star Magic Weekend at Höljes last weekend, while son Niclas only managed a semi-final place in the second round of the RallyX Nordic series.
Grönholm, driving the GRX Taneco prepared Hyundai i20 Supercar son Niclas also competed with in the RallyX Nodric rounds last weekend, defeated a grid of drivers including former WRC regular Henning Solberg on his way to the win.
The double FIA World Rally Champion started the final in pole position and after a superb start made no mistakes as he went on to win after leading from start to finish.
He said on his win in the one off event: “It was nice to have a fun race with some old friends and check out our new car. I hope we provided the fans with a lot of smiles. But this race wasn’t about me – at the end it was more about working on the car and helping Niclas and the team to be ready for our main goal at World RX,”
For son Niclas meanwhile, he couldn’t make the most of what had been a fine start to the first round of the RallyX Nordic championship earlier in the weekend. After dominating all three qualifying sessions and the semi-final, his dominance ended after a mistake on the start line in the final which led to Robin Larsson and Johan Kristoffersson finishing ahead of him.
Round two saw the Finnish driver again set a pair of fastest qualifying times to advance as the top qualifier, but again a start problem, this time in the semi-final, only saw him recover to fourth and missed out on the final as a result.
He explained on his weekend: “It was an up-and-down week for us here at Höljes. For sure it would have been nice to win or at least to fight for the win, but it was not to be. Still our main goal here was to get as much mileage in our updated car as possible and to learn how the new updates work in this challenging track and in various weather conditions. From this aspect we had a quite good race and we have a lot of positive to take with us from this to be better prepared for the FIA World RX opening round here,”
Grönholm is set to compete in the FIA World Rallycross championship this season, with round one getting underway at Höljes later this month.
