2019 Americas Rallycross ARX2 champion Fraser McConnell made his Supercar debut at the All-Star ‘Magic Weekend’ and already on his second round in a 600hp four-wheel-drive machine reached a final spot against some of the world’s best rallycross drivers.
Last year, McConnell made his transfer over to the RX2 International Series as he was offered a seat with Olsbergs MSE and finished on the podium twice in his maiden season of international rallycross.
In Thursday’s opening-round, he took a fifth fastest time in Q2 on his way to a semi-final appearence and ended seventh out of the 20-car field.
Round two of the weekend then went better for McConnell as he posted three top ten times in qualifuing and ended up making the final where he went up against rallycross regulars such as double World champion Johan Kristoffersson and expierenced driver Robin Larsson.
The Jamaican driver said after a positive debut weekend in the Supercar category: “I’m very pleased, I didn’t really have any prior expectations because I was going up against the best in the world – a two-time world champion, some front-runners in World RX and many other really, really good drivers – but I slowly built up some targets inside my head as the weekend went on and began to think, ‘if I stay consistent and make no mistakes, maybe I’ll be able to go further than I anticipated.” McConnell said.
“To make it into the final on the last day was the icing on the cake for me, and I was happy with my driving overall. I tried to be as error-free as I could, and I think I managed that.“
He conitnued: “It was super awesome to go racing again. The last race I was involved in was the 2019 RX2 final in South Africa back in November, so it’s been a much longer break than I’m used to. Hopefully I’ll be able to get more events in with the Supercar and OMSE – they really helped me to get comfortable in the car and made me feel very relaxed and at ease, just like in RX2. They operate at a very professional level, and I enjoy being a part of that.”
McConnell is set to now again join forces with Olsbergs MSE for what will be his second year in the RX2 International Series as soon as the season gets underway following the COVID-19 crisis.
