Grégoire Saucy’s breakthrough season continued on Sunday as he took a commanding victory at Circuit Zandvoort, his sixth triumph of the 2021 Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine season.
The Swiss racer, driving this year for ART Grand Prix, retained the lead from pole position at the start, and despite a little pressure from behind from MP Motorsport’s Franco Colapinto, he was able to take the chequered flag first to extend his advantage at the top of the standings to sixty-four points!
Colapinto, who scored points for the first time this season in Saturday’s opening race in the Netherlands, passed ART Grand Prix’s Gabriele Mini around the outside of turn one on the opening lap to jump into second, and once clear of the Italian, he was able to keep Saucy honest until the end.
Mini had a relatively lonely race to third, ending 6.752 seconds off the race win but more than four seconds clear of the rest of the field.
The rest of the field was led by Arden’s William Alatalo, who passed Van Amersfoort Racing’s Francesco Pizzi early on for fourth, with the Finnish driver then pulling away from the Italian, who was instead forced to fend off the challenge of MP Motorsport’s Kas Haverkort and Prema Powerteam’s Paul Aron.
Zane Maloney was another driving a defensive race, with the R-ace GP driver holding off Van Amersfoort Racing’s Mari Boya and MP Motorsport’s Oliver Gøthe. Gøthe took the final point just ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Thomas Ten Brinke and R-ace GP’s Isack Hadjar.
Hadrian David remains second in the championship despite finishing only fourteenth for R-ace GP, either side of KIC Motorsport duo Patrik Pasma and Elias Seppänen.
However, David, and the rest of the field, will need to find a way to beat Saucy, who now has six wins in the opening ten races. He has a commanding lead at the top of sixty-four points, while only seven points cover the next five drivers, David, Hadjar, Maloney, Aron and Mini.
