By many people’s standards, Toyota entered this year’s Le Mans as the rank outsiders. With an interrupted test programme and no race experience at all, it seemed unlikely that the Japanese marque would be able to take the fight to the might of Audi.
As rules in Formula One become more and more restrictive, an increasing number of manufacturers are now electing to race at Le Mans to develop new technologies. Nissan is one of those. This year, the Japanese manufacturer’s engines will power half the field in the increasingly competitive LMP2 class. This year also sees the arrival of the exciting Garage 56 project – the Nissan Deltawing.
It is funny that in a sport so complex, winning races can hinge on getting something simple to work. Maybe it is easy to forget how big a part tyres play in Formula One, particularly since Pirelli took Bridgestone’s place.
There’s no other way about it, since the introduction of the NGTC regulation at the start of last year, the British Touring Car Championship has gone from strength to strength. The regulations haven’t been met with total approval by everyone yet, but bigger grids and new cars in the championship can only be a good thing.
For any new fans to Formula One, it is perhaps difficult to understand why so many people liked Gilles Villeneuve. He did, after all, only win six races in his tragically short F1 career. But that only tells half the story.
