As a sixteen-year-old, Callum Ilott has more than just his racing career to focus on, and heads to Pau this weekend for round three of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship having sat exams at school earlier this week.
The Red Bull Junior Team driver will be competing in his first ever street race event in France, and is looking forward to swapping his school books for the steering wheel of his Carlin car.
“I’ve had two focuses over the past few days, learning the track in the sim’ and studying for my exams,” revealed Ilott. “Now I can concentrate on the racing for the nest four days.”
“It’s my first time on a street circuit so it is going to be something special. I’ve not done anything like it in karting, the closest I’ve come to it was the Las Vegas race which was laid out in a car park, not quite the same thing.”
Ilott knows the importance of having a good qualifying session at the tight and twisty Pau circuit, with overtaking near on impossible.
“Certainly we need to qualify well and I am sure the Carlin guys have a good set-up for Pau so that will help,” added Ilott.
“If I can do a good job in qualifying then it will be a question of being consistent in the race because no one is going to have much of a chance to get past if you don’t make any mistakes.”
