Wehrlein ends opening day on top for Mercedes

1 Mins read

Mercedes protégé Pascal Wehrlein posted the fastest time on the first day of the in-season test on a rain affected day at the Red Bull Ring.

The German driver set a best time of 1m11.005s during the afternoon in Austria, after a morning of non-action due to heavy rain, with the day’s running extended by two hours due to red flags being shown due to the conditions.

Reigning European Formula 3 Champion Esteban Ocon was second quickest for the Sahara Force India team, who were running their b-specification VJM08 for the first time, with their aim to race for the first time at the British Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen was the most productive driver of the day, completing 97 laps of the Red Bull Ring, finishing third quickest.

Antonio Fuoco had his first day testing for Scuderia Ferrari in Austria, finishing fourth quickest, but the Ferrari Driver Academy driver ended his day prematurely after losing control of the SF15-T at turn one and hitting the barriers.

Romain Grosjean was fifth fastest for the Lotus F1 Team, just ahead of Red Bull Junior driver Pierre Gasly, while Sauber F1 Team reserve driver Raffaele Marciello was seventh.

Current GP2 Series championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne completed 76 laps and finished eighth quickest for McLaren-Honda, while Susie Wolff ran the least number of laps during the day, ending last of the nine runners for Williams Martini Racing.
