Monza ‘still a big challenge’ – Hamilton

1 Mins read

Lewis Hamilton holds a comfortable twenty-eight-point lead in the drivers’ championship heading into this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix having dominated the race in Belgium two weeks ago for his sixth victory of 2015.

Hamilton admits his Belgian weekend was positive for the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS driver, and hopes to add another victory this weekend at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, another circuit he feels is a classic venue on the calendar.

“Spa was a really positive weekend for me,” insisted Hamilton. “I felt comfortable right the way through and it was great to finally get another win at one of the real classic F1 circuits.

“Now, we head to another of those in Monza. It’s an awesome track – so fast and with some of the most passionate fans you’ll see anywhere in the world.”

Hamilton is looking for another victory this weekend at the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar to add to his win in 2012 for McLaren and last year with Mercedes, and feels the circuit is a big challenge for drivers, even if the banking he experienced earlier this year is not used in modern day Formula 1.

“I was actually at this circuit with Sir Stirling Moss earlier this year, driving the banking in his old Mercedes W 196, which was just awesome,” revealed Hamilton. “Having that taste of what it was like for those guys back in the day really gives you a feel for the history of this place and why it became so legendary.

“It’s still a big challenge today, too. Fast, but really technical at the same time with some heavy braking and big kerbs to ride for the best line.

“Racing in Italy brings back a lot of good memories for me and I’d love to add to those this weekend, so that’s the aim.”
