Frank Wrathall took his second win of the Rockingham weekend and with it an extended Championship lead heading to the next three rounds of the series at Brands Hatch next weekend.
After the grid draw for the final race, fifth place finisher in round five, Julien Draper was drawn on pole position with Dynojet cars all around the Barwell Motorsport driver. Carl Breeze started back in fifth position.
At the start, Draper managed to hold on to the race lead heading into the Deene hairpin, and held the lead for a lap before the Preston based Championship leader took the lead at Deene on lap two.
Behind Wrathall and Draper was the sister cars of Adam Morgan and Kieran Vernon and by lap three the trio were filling out the podium – pole sitter Draper had dropped away from the podium positions.
This gave Breeze a chance to close up on the leading Dynojet cars and on lap five took third position after Vernon had to retire. This soon became second when Morgan took his Drive Through Penalty for a jump start. Wrathall however was already five and a quarter seconds up the road.
Behind all of the leading action, race two retirement Benji Hetherington had climbed his way up to fourth place from eighteenth on the grid – and was soon on the tail of his younger brother and Century Motorsport team mate Freddie.
Benji took his opportunity to pass his younger brother on lap seven and secured his second podium finish of the weekend and of the season.
Breeze kept chasing Wrathall to the line, but Wrathall had built up a gap which wasn't going to be lost and took the chequered flag some three seconds ahead of nearest rival Breeze. The Hetherington brothers finished third and fourth with former Clio Cup driver Stephen Tyldsley fifth and Tom Sharp sixth.
Rounding out the top ten were the returning Tom Dunstan, Tockwith Motorsport's Alice Powell (Her best result in G50's), Joachim Ritter and Ginetta Junior graduate Aaron Williamson. With Colin White unable to take the start, the Chairman's Cup victory went the way of Tony Hughes.
Speaking after securing his second win of the weekend, Wrathall said: “The reverse grid can work for you or against you, it cost me at Thruxton but today it went well and I was able to come through to the front quickly. To take two wins from three races this weekend, and second place in the other, is good – I'm really pleased.”
Rounds seven, eight and nine of the 2010 Ginetta G50 Cup take place on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit next weekend, the 1st and 2nd May.
