Benji Hetherington won the final race of the 2010 Ginetta G50 Cup season around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, with brother Freddie finishing in second place.
Frank Wrathall wrapped up the championship in the previous race, and opted to sit out the season finale. Chris Dittmann started the race from pole position, courtesy of the top four finishers from Round 27 being reversed for Round 28. Wrathall's absence meant that Dittmann had the front row all to himself.
He capitalised on this to lead away from pole position, with Benji Hetherington moving into second with Carl Breeze, who had won the earlier two races of the meeting, in third. Freddie Hetherington held fourth early on, while guest driver Dave Newsham got past Mark Davies into fifth. Dan Denis followed him through into sixth, before his car came to a halt on lap two.
By the end of lap five, the top seven cars were running very close, although Dittmann's chances of victory were ended when he was issued with a drive-through penalty for a false-start. He served his penalty at the end of lap eight, allowing Benji Hetherington to take the lead of the race. His brother and Century Motorsport teammate Freddie was now just behind him in second, having already passed Breeze at Druids on lap seven.
Tom Sharp had been making up places since the start and passed Newsham for fourth at Paddock Hill Bend on lap 11.
Benji Hetherington won the race by 1.6 seconds from his brother, who had held on to second after late pressure from Breeze, who set the fastest lap in his attempt to take the position. Sharp finished fourth, ahead of Newsham and Davies.
Benji said about his win: “It couldn’t have gone much better for me that one, I couldn’t have scripted it! Everything went absolutely perfect and it’s great to have Freddie up there on the podium with me. It proves what we can both do, we’ve won in British GT and I knew it was only a matter of time before we’d do something similar in G50 Cup. It’s as good as it gets for Century Motorsport and ‘Team Hetherington’!”
