Autosport Young Guns runner up Max Cornelius headed to Pembrey this week to test for British Formula 3 outfit Carlin. It was Cornelius' first taste of Formula 3 machinery as he embarks on a test programme with the title winning team.
As the most successful team in British F3 history with six titles under their belt, Cornelius was in capable hands with Carlin, who have seen drivers Jaime Alguersuari, Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne take the last three F3 titles for the team.
Cornelius embarked on the test as he weighs up his options for 2011 after a successful start to his car racing career this season. Seven race wins saw him challenging for the Young Guns championship, but the 16 year old missed out on the crown by just a single point, with an incident at the last corner on the last lap of the season costing him the title.
Carlin, who have run Formula One stars Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen on similar tests at Pembrey in the past, were impressed with Cornelius, with Commercial Director Steve Hollman saying:
“Max is still very young so it’s a good idea to get him some experience in an F3 car which is a great platform for young driver development. Despite this being his first experience of the F3 car, Max did a great job and adapted very well to the increased power and grip; the team have been very impressed with him. I think this will give him a really good indication of how he needs to develop as a driver as his career continues.”
