Lamborghini has announced that its single marque race series, the Lamborghini Super Trofeo, will launch in North America later this year.
The series will be sanctioned in 2013 by the International Motor Sports Association and will race alongside GRAND-AM and the ALMS at most events.
The European version of the series debuted in 2009 and a second championship, in Asia, was added last year. Dubbed ‘the ultimate single-make series’, all competitors drive the 570 bhp Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo.
The company has revealed that the new North American series is the perfect series for Pro-Am racers, ensuring maximum track time with practice, qualifying and two races over the two-day race weekend.
Then, at the end of the season, the winners of the North American series will be invited to take part in the world final in Italy, where they will face the winners of both the European and Asian categories.
President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, said: “We’re delighted to extend our race series into the North American market, which reflects both the recognition and success of our race series worldwide, and the importance of the USA to Lamborghini. This is the perfect time to formally launch Lamborghini motorsport in the USA.”
Michael Lock, COO of Lamborghini America, said: “We’re extremely excited to be bringing the Super Trofeo to the USA. The Lamborghini marque continues to gain recognition and followers [here], and motorsport is the perfect way to open the door further on our brand and our technical competence, for both customers and also fans.”
Meanwhile ALMS President Scott Atherton said: “We are honoured that Lamborghini has chosen us to help deliver [the experience] to Super Trofeo competitors and fans.”
