Current G50 championship leader Reece Somerfield will be moving into the main G55 class of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup for the second meeting of the year at Donington Park this weekend.
The 24 year old, who took third overall in class last season, finished in the top two of the G50 category across the three opening rounds over Easter weekend at Brands Hatch, taking two class wins.
After finishing tenth overall in one of the races, beating three G55 racers in the process, Somerfield has elected to progress into the higher class early on in the season.
Somerfield said: “I loved racing the G50 Cup car, however, at the end of last year and the start of this, I found myself running amongst the back end of the G55 field, in what was essentially a less powerful car. Therefore, I began to think ‘I wonder what I could be doing in the G55’, so, hopefully, this weekend we will find out.”
Somerfield’s graduation further weakens the G50 class, with just Sean Huyton and Dan Norris-Jones left as full-time entrants into the category for Donington.
