TT 2013: Four For Dunlop As Birchalls Break Through At Last

2 Mins read

Michael Dunlop maintained his perfect record at the 2013 Isle of Man TT with victory in Wednesday’s second Supersport race, completing a double in the class. The day also saw a first TT win for Ben and Tom Birchall in the Sidecars as the brothers made up for the heart-breaking puncture which cost them the first race.

Much like in the Superstock race, Dunlop had to do the chasing for much of the race with Bruce Anstey the man to make the running this time. The New Zealander set a furious pace to move four seconds clear of the Ulsterman heading into the final lap but he hadn’t bargained for a lap record by his pursuer. Dunlop went inside the previous mark by 28 seconds with a 128.667mph run to pull off a six second swing, taking him two ahead of Anstey.

After narrowly missing out in the SES TT Zero race, John McGuinness was forced to wait a little longer for his first win of the 2013 meeting after finishing a distant third. The nineteen-time winner had a close battle with William Dunlop which he edged by 0.967s at the finish while Cameron Donald was just ten seconds further back in fifth.

The outcome of the second Sidecar race was in little doubt from the outset with the Birchall brothers leading from start to finish, beating Dave Molyneux and Patrick Farrance who ended the week winless despite setting the pace through qualifying. Race one winners Tim Reeves and Dan Sayle looked set to run the Birchalls closer but it was their turn to suffer bad luck as they were forced to retire at Ballaugh. Conrad Harrison and Mike Aylott were third for their second podium of the week with John Holden and Andy Winkle fourth ahead of Gary Bryan and Jamie Winn with Gary and Dan Knight completing the top six.
