8 – Injuries

There were two major injuries during the 2013 Sprint Cup Series. Both Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart missed races due to injury throughout the year, with the latter missing all action from August until the season’s end. Hamlin’s came after his rivalry with Joey Logano reached boiling point at Auto Club Speedway, with the two coming together on the final lap resulting in an accident causing a compression fracture to Hamlin’s lower back, causing Hamlin to miss the next five races of the season. Tony Stewart’s injury came while leading a sprint car race in early August, breaking both the tibia and fibula bones in his lower right leg. Stewart missed the remainder of the season with Max Papis, Austin Dillon and Mark Martin substituting for the injured Stewart. Martin Truex, Jr. also suffered a broken wrist in an incident at Bristol, but carried on racing despite having to wear a cast on his right wrist.
