Johnannes van Overbeek proved the potential worth of an LMP2 chassis around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as he set the fastest lap of the second free practice session ahead of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix at the track.

In the Extreme Speed Motorsport run HPD ARX-03b he shares with Ed Brown van Overbeek lapped the 2.2 mile circuit in 1:19.785, topping not only the second 60 minute practice but the series’ running of the weekend so far with a lap half a second faster than Scott Pruett set to lead the first session.

The strong showing for the Tequila Patron sponsored team continued with their second car – driven by Scott Sharp and Ryan Dalziel third fastest in the session, sandwiching the Spirit of Daytona Racing Chevrolet Corvette DP of Richard Westbrook and Michael Valiante. OAK Racing were fourth fastest with Action Express Racing completing the top five.

Pruett and teammate Memo Rojas were sixth fastest overall.

With a lap of 1:21.248 Bruno Junqueira set the best time of the Prototype Challenge (PC) class in the #09 RSR Racing entry he shares with Duncan Ende though the Brazilian couldn’t match the first session time of Colin Braun.

John Edwards followed co-driver Dirk Mueller to the top of the GT Le Mans (GTLM) times on 1:23.575 in the #56 BMW Team RLL entry. Similarly it was a Corvette C7.R that was second fastest though rather than the #4 it was the #3 entry driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia. The Nick Tandy and Richard Lietz crewed#911 Porsche North America car was third fastest as all but one entry in the 11 strong class were covered by a single second.

Andy Lally was the fastest man in GT Daytona (GTD) in Magnus Racing’s Porsche (1:27.462). The #35 Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 was second fastest ahead of first session leaders Leh Keen and Cooper MacNeil of Alex Job Racing. The ‘Lizards #35 Audi was fourth fastest in class.
