Felix Rosenqvist took advantage of a safety car period to snatch victory in the qualification race at Macau away from his Mücke Motorsport team-mate Lucas Auer.
Pole sitter Rosenqvist dropped to third on the opening lap of the race due to the slipstreaming nature of the first part of the Macau circuit, the Swede was firstly able to move back into second place when Max Verstappen crashed out, and then slipstreamed himself back into the lead with three laps to go.
Verstappen had made a good start to move from fifth on the grid into second for Van Amersfoort Racing, but a mistake at the Solitude Esses on the fourth lap saw him damage his suspension, and although he was able to return to the pits, his race was over.
Just after Verstappen’s crash, the safety car was deployed after TOM’S driver Sam MacLeod crashed at Paiol, and with no cranes in the vicinity to remove the Briton’s car, Auer saw his comfortable lead taken away from him, and on the restart he was immediately under attack from Rosenqvist, and had to concede the victory to this team-mate.
Tom Blomqvist finished on the podium for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, holding off the challenge of European Formula 3 Champion Esteban Ocon of the SJM Theodore Racing by Prema team, while Nick Cassidy was an excellent fifth for ThreeBond with T-Sport.
Cassidy had overtaken Double R Racing’s Roberto Merhi after the restart, with the Spaniard being forced to settle for sixth, although he should be happy with that result after starting tenth, moving up four places on the opening lap.
Nicholas Latifi of SJM Theodore Racing by Prema got the best of Carlin’s Jordan King after a race-long battle, while Felix Serralles of Team West-Tec F3 and Stefano Coletti of EuroInternational completed the top ten.
Antonio Giovinazzi was an early casualty, with the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin crashing out on the opening lap after brushing the wall at Mandarin Oriental and collecting both his team-mate Sean Galael and Fortec Motorsports driver Alex Palou, with all three drivers being eliminated from proceedings.
