Well known GT racing squad RAM Racing have announced they will be fielding a Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 in the 2015 Avon Tyres British GT Championship.
Running the car for Britons Lewis Plato and Alistair MacKinnon, the full season entry into the SRO run championship will be entwined with the team’s 24 Hour Series commitments where they have already competed in the season opening Dubai 24 Hours in what was their first race with the SLS.
“It’s great for us to be entering a new series,” commented Team Principal Dan Shufflebottom. “The British GT Championship is very strong right now so we were keen to be a part of it. We had great success running the SLS in Dubai 24 Hours, our debut race with the car, putting it on the overall podium against some teams very experienced in running it. To me, this is testament to our team and it gives me confidence that they will embrace this new challenge in a similar way.”
For 22-year-old Plato, this will be his first taste of GT racing following his victory in the Sunoco IMSA 200 Challenge which saw him race a Camaro at the support race for the Daytona 24 Hours. A big change from the Radicals he normally drove.
He said: “British GT is going to be a brilliant experience and I can’t wait to get started on what will be an exciting new development in my career.
“I’ve got a fantastic team-mate in Alistair, he has a strong understanding of GT racing that will help me massively in my learning year. I want to develop as much as I can and I am really excited about getting out in the new car.”
Indeed he does have a good team-mate, Mackinnon has raced Lotuses in the past in British GT and will have a concerted crack at the title this year in a car that has proved successful worldwide.
“I am absolutely thrilled,” Mackinnon commented. “To be given the opportunity to return to GT racing was one that I grabbed with both hands. Ever since I first drove the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 I knew it had potential to be a great car. I am looking to build on my experience from the British GT Championship and, together with Lewis and RAM Racing, I am confident we can have a great season.”
The first taste of competitive action for the RAM Racing crew will be the season opener at Oulton Park on Easter Weekend.
