Breen Completes Hat-trick With Victory In Azores

1 Mins read

Peugeot Academy driver Craig Breen and co-driver Scott Martin have won their third rally on the trot winning the 2015 SATA Rallye Azores, round four of the FIA European Rally Championship. The pair won the event by just over a minute from championship rival Kajetan Kajetanowicz.

The final leg started well for Polish driver Kajetanowicz, the LOTOS Racing Team driver went second fastest on the opening stage which was enough to snatch the lead off Breen by 0.5 seconds.  The Pole had the wrong tyres for the next test and dropped back to second 15.8 seconds off Breen. Kajetanowicz closed the gap to 11.9 seconds on stage 14 as they headed for service.

The Pole took a gamble for the second loop and chose a soft tyre compound to try and attack for the lead but the decision backfired. Breen won the three remaining stages to cross the finish line 1:02.1 ahead of his championship rival.

“I came with the sole objective of winning the rally.” said the Irishman after the event, “I have one extra year, to show that I deserve to be moving forward in this sport. Myself and Scott (Martin) are doing a great job. This weekend has been good for us, we have been fast when we needed to be fast and clever when we needed to be clever.”

Ricardo Moura finished off the top three over two minutes off the lead with Bruno Magalhaes and Robert Consani in fourth and fifth respectively.

In ERC2 Dominykas Butvilas concluded a successful weekend with victory in the category winning by over four minutes from David Botka.

In the ERC Junior Rally it was Chris Ingram who took his first win of the season. His gravel experience paid off as he finished 30.4 seconds ahead of Diogo Gago with Steve Rokland a further 9.5 seconds behind in third.
