Hyundai Motorsport’s New Generation i20 grabbed the attention of fans, competitors and the media during the fifth round of the 2016 FIA European Rally Championship from the Ypres Rally, Belgium.
It was a relatively trouble-free weekend for the i20 on the high-speed, narrow roads of the Ypres Rally after five days of testing with the car before it was debuted to the public.
Testing the New Generation i20 was Hyundai’s Test and Development Driver Kevin Abbring with co-driver Sebastian Marshall. The Dutchman said about the New Generation i20 “Really impressive! Building a reliable R5 isn’t so easy, this car is great!”
The New Generation i20 is scheduled to be homologated later on in the year. However, before the rally had even begun, the Hyundai had racked up over 400 kilometres in two days of running in Flanders, which is more than what the rest of the ERC field have done.
Hyundai’s Customer Racing Manager Andrea Adamo added “We are very happy with the performance of the car compared to the fastest crews,” explains Andrea. “That our car completed the weekend trouble-free and with competitive times is a testament to the quality of the car we have produced.”
“The results, together with feedback from Kevin, will allow us to better focus development before our customers take the New Generation i20 R5 out to compete.”
