Optimum Motorsport are eager and raring to go ahead of the 2018 British GT Championship which gets underway this weekend at Oulton Park. The Yorkshire-based team will enter the GT3 class for the first time since 2012, fielding 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE-Pro Champion Jonny Adam alongside Flick Haigh.
The squad have a good record in the GT4 class in recent seasons, having won the GT4 drivers’ title back in 2016, and the Pro-Am class title in GT4 last year. As such, they were able to persuade Aston Martin factory driver Jonny Adam to join them, leaving TF Sport at the end of last season.
Optimum will therefore compete with the number #75 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 car upon their return to the top British GT class.
Adam will be joined by Agricultural Business Management graduate Flick Haigh, who started her track racing career in 2007, joining the Caterham Classic graduates. She has gone on to race in the Dubai 24 hours, the British GT Cup and the Britcar Endurance Championship throughout her career. It will be her first season in British GT, but with Jonny Adam as her partner-in-crime, she will be able to learn a lot from the 24-hours of Le Mans class Champion.
The whole team is ready for the challenges that lie ahead, with team principal Shaun Goff, saying in their official press release: “We’ve had great success in the British GT Championship in the past and we believe we will again in the future. We’re under no illusions; we know this is a super-competitive championship and everything needs to be spot on if we are to run towards the front. Flick is adapting to her new environment well, while Jonny, we know is a sensationally quick and consistent driver.”
British GT Champion in 2015 and 2016 Jonny Adam excited for the new challenge ahead, saying: “I can’t wait to finally start the 2018 British GT season at Oulton Park. Testing and preparation has gone well with both Optimum Motorsport and Flick. We have been doing good mileage both in the UK and aboard with the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 and fine-tuning everything ahead of Oulton Park. Flick and the team have been performing very well and our aim is to start the season off strongly with two consistent results come Easter weekend against a very competitive GT3 grid of cars.”
