Triple German rally champion Fabian Kreim says it’s his “goal” to win the ERC1 Junior class on next week’s Rally di Roma Capitale.

Kreim, who returns to the ERC for the first time since 2018 next weekend, has swapped his regular Skoda Fabia R5 that he took to the German title last year for a Rally2 Volkswagen Polo R5.

The German driver said on his chances of a strong result next weekend: “I tested the VW Polo GTI R5 on asphalt and I had a good feeling right away. The car has potential, even though the handling is completely different in terms of set-up than in the Škoda.”

“We will have an incredibly big competition. With the VW Polo we can certainly still gain experience. Nevertheless, it is my goal to fight for the ERC1 Junior victory.”

Kreim’s 2020 campaign has been supported by Pole Promotion, who in recent seasons have helped drivers including DTM star René Rast and Aston Martin Racing driver Nikki Thiim compete on the international motorsport scene.

Owner of Pole Promotion Dennis Rostek added on Kreim’s programme: “Together we launched this project in the last few days and hope to motivate our partners for further runs within the ERC.”

“One of our goals is to support and accompany racing drivers on their way to professional sports. With Fabian we have one of the best talents in German rallying that we want to develop further. Together with our long-standing business partner Porta Möbel and Volkswagen, we managed to put together a strong package for Rally di Roma Capitale.”

The German’s last season in the European series saw him in a three-way battle for the ERC1 Junior title with Nikolay Gryazin, now a regular WRC2 driver as part of the Hyundai young driver programme, and Chris Ingram, who went on to win the ERC last year.

Rally di Roma Capitale gets underway next weekend, with coverage from every day of the event here on The Checkered Flag.
