Ken Block is a free agent, living in a world post his multi-year deal with Ford and seemingly striving to now race in every Off-Road vehicle under the sun. Thanks to a recent announcement from Tuthill Porsche, Off-Road Racing fans will get a glimpse of Ken Block behind the wheel of a vintage Rallying 911 at this year’s East Africa Safari Classic Rally.
The EASCR is one of the toughest, most glorious and adored Classic Rallies in the world and this November will see competitors tackle approximately 5000km of terrain amidst beautiful Kenyan countryside over a gruelling nine days.
Tuthill Porsche is aiming for a hat-trick of consecutive wins at the event and bringing on a driver of Block’s experience has Richard Tuthill of Tuthill Porsche confident of success;
“I am delighted that one of the most influential figures of the motorsport world is joining us for the EASCR in Kenya! With his extraordinary breadth and depth of experience, we know he will be a serious contender for such an event. I can’t wait to meet in person and help him get comfortable at the wheel of a safari Porsche, which we all know is one of life’s great experiences!!”
Tuthill isn’t the only one delighted to have a driver of Ken Block’s calibre competing in the Rally, Lynn Tundo, Managing Director of EASCR, said
“We are delighted to welcome such a world-renowned driver as Ken Block for the tenth edition of EASCR. Such a big name driver is testament to the long-standing reputation of this great classic rally.”
The excitement it seems goes both ways, with Block echoing Tuthill and Tundo’s excitement;
“This is going to be a wild year! And the opportunity to do things like the Safari Rally with Tuthill Porsche is huge. I can’t wait to push myself to the absolute limit, across some of the gnarliest terrain, in an air-cooled 911 prepared by the best in the business.”
There is plenty of reason for excitement from all parties. For Block, it represents how being a free agent allows a driver to explore all of the wonderful machinery and events out there. Last month, he competed in the 100 Acre Wood Rally in America piloting a Skoda Fabia R5 for the first time and this announcement adds another vehicle and event to his ever-growing wealth of experience.
It’s this experience that likely has Tuthill excited, Block has raced in the World Rally Championship, the World Rallycross Championship, he is a multiple runner-up in the American Rally Championship, a runner-up in the Global Rallycross Championship and he has 5 X-Games medals. So, the American brings quite the resume to help Tuthill Porsche conquer the stages in Kenya this November.
The event organisers should be doubly excited about Block’s involvement as he is as much a celebrity as he is a world-class off-road racer.
Thanks to his booming Gymkhana series of Youtube videos, Block has amassed a massive Social Media following, and his involvement in the East Africa Safari Classic Rally will bring extra publicity to the event.
