21-year-old driver and Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona LMP3 winner, Kay van Berlo will return to United Autosports for the upcoming European Le Mans Series.
van Berlo will join Jim McGuire and Andrew Bentley in the #3 AERO Ligier JS P320, taking on the seat that was originally Duncan Tappy’s, who has now moved up in to the LMP2 class with the team.
The Dutch driver is not new to the team, having previously competed with them in the 2018/2019 Asian Le Mans Series, winning the second round at Fuji, Japan. More recently he has raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux, Carrera Cup Deutschland, and finished the inaugural season of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America in the runner-up spot, despite getting the most wins of anyone that season.
This year has already seen success for the upcoming star, winning the 2022 Rolex 24 at Daytona with Riley Motorsports in the #74 car with Felipe Fraga, Gar Robinson, and Michael Cooper.
“I’m super excited to start racing again for United Autosports after our Asian Le Mans campaign in 2018/2019, which went pretty well with a win in Fuji,” said van Berlo. “There’s plenty of opportunities this year to get some trophies and see if we can put some good results down. I love working with the team and United has one of the fastest cars out there.
“They’ve had some amazing results in the last few years winning Le Mans, WEC and the ELMS. It’s good to be back with Jim. I’ve raced with him a few times and he’s been doing a lot of driving since I was last with him. I’ve also worked with Andrew before which is great.
“United is already a familiar environment so we are good to go. I’m looking forward to getting back to the ELMS as well. I’ve never raced at Hungary, but it looks like an awesome track. I can’t wait to get going.”
“I’m glad we could welcome Kay back to the team to take the third spot in the #3 LMP3 car this year. He is a fast, reliable driver and I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on with Jim and Andrew this year.” added co-owner Zak Brown.
Richard Dean added “I’m so pleased we have agreed a deal with Kay to return to the team for the 2022 ELMS. When he first joined the ELMS grid, we were racing against him, so to now have him as part of our crew is fantastic.
“He has been racing over in America for a couple of seasons now and has really excelled in everything he has done, including getting the win at Daytona. I’m looking forward to seeing him back with the team.”
