William Sawalich plays the strategy game, earns second career ARCA Menards Series East win of the season

In a race that looked like was going to won by Sean Hingorani and Luke Fenhaus, William Sawalich denied both of those odds.

Throughout the first half of the Dutch Boy 150 on Saturday night, Sawalich seemed to be surprisingly slow. He stated that it was all part of the strategy.

Sawalich carefully saved his tires during the first half of the race, and made an aggressive bump-and-run move to take the lead from Hingorani with 50 laps to go. He would hold on until the end to earn his second career ARCA Menards Series East win of the season. With his win, he increases his championship points lead by 13 points over Luke Fenhaus.

“I think I saved my tires perfectly and kind of hoped for a restart there and that happened,” stated Sawalich. “I’m really proud of this team. We had a really fast Soundgear Toyota Camry. I can’t thank this team enough for this opportunity.” Sawalich describes his contact with the Hingorani, stating that “I kind of got into the 15 there. I thought I was inside of him so I kept my nose in. I thought it was pretty fair.”

Hingorani, who won the pole and led a race-high 102 laps, wasn’t very pleased with the contact from Sawalich. “I don’t think the 18 races clean, but it was a good race,” he stated. “I think we’ll get better next time.”

Lavar Scott made a late charge for the second spot with 13 laps to go, and passed Hingorani to earn his best career finish for in the East Series for Rev Racing.

Billy Venturini, the co-owner of Venturini Motorsports who made his return to the driver’s seat for the first time since 2007, came home with the fourth position. “It was fun, I got to race some real good race car drivers tonight,” Venturini stated. “I got to pass some too, that was fun.”

Luke Fenhaus would round out the top five, with Zachary Tinkle, Tim Monroe, Will Kimmel, Jeffery MacZink, and Derrick McGrew Jr. rounding out the top ten.

The last four races on the ARCA Menards Series East schedule will be combination races with the main series, starting with Iowa Speedway on 15 July.
