Landen Lewis wins ARCA West race at Portland in a wild finish

2 Mins read

After finishing second in his last four ARCA starts, Landen Lewis finally breaks his streak and scores his second career win in the ARCA Menards Series West at Portland International Speedway on Friday. But for Lewis, this win was not easy for him.

In a stacked field with 22 drivers, four of them included full-time Xfinity Series regulars. Cole Custer, the driver for Stewart-Haas Racing, took over the 55 car for High Point Racing, while his SHR teammate, Riley Herbst, drove a third entry for Jerry Pitts Racing. Parker Retzlaff drove the 02 for Young’s Motorsports, and Kyle Sieg drove the 46 for Lowden Jackson Motorsports.

On the final restart with two laps to go, Custer had the lead with Lewis starting on his outside. Lewis would be able to take the lead coming into turn four, but on the final lap, Custer looked for a run on the inside lane. The two remained side-by-side until turn nine, when Custer got loose and fell back to fourth. On the final turn, Sean Hingorani and Trevor Huddleston made contact, causing Hingorani to spin through the grass. Custer regained the second spot, while Lewis survived the chaos and won the race.

“I was running the restart through my head trying to picture what was going to happen,” stated Lewis. “I had really good starts all day long, so I wasn’t doubting myself that I could get a good start, but I was thinking about good Custer would be. Getting into Turn 1, I messed up and gave him an opportunity. It was a dogfight, but also hard racing.”

Lewis led a total of 18 laps, while Custer led the most with 22. Riley Herbst led 17 laps before his engine expired on lap 43.

After the spin on the final lap, Dale Quarterley came home with an impressive third place finish, after running inside the top ten for most of the race. The ARCA Menards Series East points leader William Sawalich finished in fourth, despite having hood damage to his car. Parker Retzlaff would round out the top five, while Bradley Erickson, Caleb Shrader, Takuma Koga, Davey Magras, and Eric Johnson, Jr. rounded out the top ten.

The next ARCA Menards Series West race will be held next week at Sonoma Raceway on 9 June.
