New BTCC outfit, AmD Technik, have announced plans to bring the Volkswagen Name back to the grid in 2010 in a VW Gold, driven by Shaun Hollomby, the managing director of the company, while the 2009 Dunlop Sport Maxx Champion, Simon Shaw, is working on getting the required sponsorship to enter selected rounds.
The team settled on the Golf after deciding they wanted to use a car from the VAG Group, and didn’t want to use a Seat Toledo or Leon for their debut as that has been done before.
AmD took the Sport Maxx title with Shaw in 2009, driving a SEAT Leon, will be looking to use their experience of VW's to make their debut season a success.
Hollamby has limited single seater racing experience, although has most recently been racing in the VW Cup, taking 2nd in the Championship in 2005 in the VW Golf R32, with 7 wins.
Shaw, who took the Class A title by winning the opening race at Snetterton and took second place in the season finale to secure the overall title, scored in every round of the Championship and took 7 race wins en route to the title.
The car raced overseas in the Baltic Championship and for the last two years has received a waiver from TOCA because its only a 3 door, while S2000 cars are normally 5 door.
When the car hits the track, it'll be the first time a VW Golf has appeared in the Championship since 1989, when Alan Minshaw raced a Class C one before handing over to John Morris for the Silverstone finale.
