Cecotto Jr Joins Super Nova For Asia Series

1 Mins read

Super Nova Racing has completed its driver lineup for the 2011 GP2 Asia Series season by announcing that Johnny Cecotto Jr will drive for the team.

The announcement follows the news that Fairuz Fauzy will return to Super Nova after previously racing for the team in both 2006 and 2008.

Cecotto Jr, the son of former motorcycling world champion and Formula 1 driver Johnny Cecotto, made his GP2 debut for DPR towards the end of 2009, before racing for Trident Racing in 2010, although he left the team with two rounds of the season remaining.

He drove the first laps for the new Team AirAsia when he took part in the shakedown test for the new cars held at Paul Ricard last November. There was speculation that he would be joining the team for the coming season, but will now lineup for Super Nova instead.

The deal between the 21-year-old German-born Venezuelan and the Super Nova team is currently for the three-meeting Asia Series only, but the team are hopeful that Cecotto will perform well and their relationship will extend into the European-based season which gets underway in Turkey in May.

Cecotto is pleased to be joining Super Nova. Despite a testing GP2 career that has produced just six points so far, he is aiming high. “First of all I am very, very happy to be working with such an important team in international motorsport,” said Cecotto. “It will be a tough GP2 Asia championship, with all of the Main Series drivers involved but my target is the top three and I am confident that we can achieve this.”

Team Principal David Sears believes that Cecotto has the potential to produce strong results for the team. “We are very happy to welcome Johnny Cecotto into the team for the GP2 Asia Series,” said Sears. “We have monitored his progress for the past few seasons and feel that he is an extremely talented young driver with the potential to deliver some excellent results as part of the Super Nova family.”
