Robert Kubica has been airlifted to hospital after being involved in a high-speed accident in a rally in Italy.

The Renault Formula 1 driver was competing in the Ronde di Andorra Rally in a Skoda Fabia S2000. A statement issued by Lotus Renault GP said that Kubica had been airlifted to Pietra Ligure Hospital, where he was undergoing medical checks. His co-driver Jakub Gerber, escaped unhurt. The team said they will issue another statement as soon as more information is known.

Earlier this week Kubica tested the new Renault car in Valencia, the Polish driver setting the fastest time on the final day of the test.
