Record Breaking Hawksworth Closing On Star Mazda Crown

1 Mins read

Jack Hawsworth’s extraordinary maiden campaign in the Star Mazda Championship is heading towards its dream ending, with a seventh win of the season in the latest rounds putting the Brit within touching distance of the title.

Bradford-born Hawksworth has had an incredible first season in America, overcoming his lack of experience to win on road courses and street circuits alike, as well as challenge for victory on the ovals.

A sensational weekend around the street circuit of Baltimore saw Hawksworth take victory in the opening race and second in race two, this despite the cancellation of qualifying severely limiting his time preparing around the new track.

With a record-breaking ten pole positions and ten podium finishes in fourteen starts to his name, Hawksworth now holds a 61 point championship lead with 93 points left to fight over. It means the BRDC Rising Star can seal the championship next time out in the penultimate outing of the season at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California.

“Baltimore was one of those weekends that I’m just glad to have survived without incurring any major damage, to be honest, and to come out of it looking in such good shape championship-wise is perfect,” said the 21 year old. Massive thanks to the Team Pelfrey guys for working tirelessly as ever to give me a fantastic car.

“We were strong on road courses earlier in the campaign, so I’m really looking forward to Laguna Seca. It’s one of the most famous circuits in the world and I’m pumped-up to do a really good job round there to wrap this championship up.

“I was obviously really happy with the records we set at the weekend, but equally, they will count for nothing if we don’t go on to win the championship. We’re almost there now, but I can’t take my eye off the ball even for a second. I want to finish the job off at Laguna – and I want to do it in style.”
