Ahmad Al Harthy ended his 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am 1 championship winning campaign with a seventh podium of the year at Brands Hatch.
The Omani racer led the class in both the weekend’s two races, but eventually slipped to a second place finish in race, an important result for the 31 year old as he was watched trackside by a large group of guests from his homeland.
The second race didn’t go quite as well though, an excursion at Surtees ropping to fourth, before contact two laps later sent him into the Paddock Hill gravel trap and out of the race.
“The last race was disappointing for us but it’s been an enjoyable weekend and what an absolutely fantastic year”, said Al Harthy. “Second in race one was good, it was great to be on the podium for all of the fans who came here this weekend from Oman.
“In race two I had a comfortable lead and we looked good for a win but I still had to push and just made a small mistake into Surtees. We had so much speed and could still have had a podium, but if someone in front of you is slower and defending heavily it’s almost impossible to pass.
“It really has been an amazing year overall, so many wins, being on the podium in every race we finished and making history as the first Omani, and driver of Arab origin, to win a championship at this level. There are so many people to thank who have been involved in this journey from day one, I’m so grateful to all of them – especially my incredible sponsors.”
Al Harthy ends the year with twelve Pro-Am 1 class victories to his name and a total of seventeen podiums in twenty races, making him a major celebrity in Oman.
