Dean Stoneman Makes Full Time Return To Racing In Carrera Cup GB

1 Mins read

Former single seater star Dean Stoneman has confirmed his plans to compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB in 2013 with current champions Redline Racing.

The 2010 FIA Formula 2 champion looked destined to have a big future in single seaters when he penned a contract to race in the Formula Renault 3.5 championship for 2011 and secured a test with the Williams F1 team. However in January 2011 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and given just a 50 per cent chance of surviving.

Now though having beaten cancer, Stoneman is on the comeback trail and targeting a successful career in GT and sports car racing. He said: “Our aim this year is to hopefully win the Carrera Cup and then work towards the Porsche Supercup for 2014 and 2015. The route I want to do now is into sports and GT cars. It’s a lot more money to do single-seaters and a one-in-a-million chance of getting to Formula 1.

“I thought Porsches was the way forward. Getting advice from Tim Harvey is a great help. We’ve taken advice from people who have been there and done it. It is quite a physical car to drive, but I’m not struggling at all and I’m working on my fitness.”

Stoneman who has already tested for his new Redline team will continue his pre-season testing programme before the season gets underway at Brands Hatch on the weekend of the 30/31 March.
