Renault Clio Cup powerhouses Team Pyro have announced their first three drivers for the 2014 Michelin Clio Cup Series, with former Clio Cup UK racer David Dickenson amongst them.
The Irishman is returning to UK racing and the third-generation Clio after competing with Pyro in the Eurocup Clio series last year as team-mate to eventual European and UK champion Josh Files.
The 27 year old has six years experience in Renault Clio racing under his belt, competing in the UK, Italian, Eurocup and Bohemia series’ over the year, experience that will surely make him a front-runner in 2014.
Dickenson will be joined by Clio Series returnee Ollie Pidgley. The 16 year old former karter made his car-racing debut with the team during the final weekend of the 2013 Clio Cup Series at Brands Hatch, instantly impressing with a maiden podium finish.
The third confirmed signings is Andy Wilkins, a relative racing newcomer. After running a Clio on trackdays for a number of years, Wilkins has competed in the Trackday Trophy for the last couple of years, with a move into the Clio’s marking his first true championship campaign.
“David has done Clios for a long time and he knows what he’s doing, he should have some good results,” said Pyro team principal Mark Hunt. “He’s decided to do the Clio Cup Series this year as there’s a little bit less pressure, it’s only six weekends of racing and that means he can concentrate on work more.
“Ollie is a good young driver. The third place he got at Brands last year was pretty exceptional, and if we do the work over the winter we need to, I think he can be top three in the Clio Series and then move on to the UK series in 2015.
“Andy bought his Clio for trackdays originally, then he progressed to the Trackday Trophy last year and now the move into the Clio Cup Series is a natural progression for him. Hopefully we can get him into the top ten regularly.”
