Thomas Biagi is set to join the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup grid for the 2014 championship season, competing with the MOMO-Megatron team.
Biagi will race with the number 23 adorning the side of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the very same number that he ran with during his dominant 2003 title campaign in FIA GT’s.
The Italian, like many young racers, began his career by attempting to scale the single seater ladder. He started in Formula Alfa Boxer before progressing up to the Italian Formula 3 Championship. Following a spell in FIA Formula 3000 he then switched to the second tier Italian Formula 3000 championship and spent several further seasons in the series after its re-branding as Euro F3000.
It was after these campaigns that yielded solid, yet unspectacular results that he switched to FIA GT’s. Since taking that aforementioned title in the series in 2003, he has competed in a variety of Grand Touring machinery. He most prominently featured in the illustrious Vitaphone Racing’s FIA GT line-up, assisting the team to two entrant’s titles and himself to the driver’s title in 2007.
Speaking about the opportunity to race in Porsche’s premiere 911 series, Biagi said “Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is a top class championship, one in which I still have loads to learn. I enjoyed driving the car since the beginning, even if I still have to familiarise completely with the rear overhanging engine: the 991 is very appealing both aesthetically and from the driving view point, I would say it was love at first sight.”
Round 1 of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup gets underway with a single race over the FIA Formula One World Championship Spanish Grand Prix weekend, from the 9th to the 11th of May. The series then takes in such spectacular venues as; Monaco, The Red Bull Ring in Austria, Silverstone, Hockenheim, The Hungaroring, Spa, Monza and the first ever Supercup round in Russia with two races on the spectacular new Sochi International Street Circuit.
