Smith to Redline for Carrera Cup GB Debut

1 Mins read

Rob Smith has become a late addition to this weekend’s Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain grid, taking the Redline Racing seat vacated by Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher. The pair intend to alternate driving duties over the balance of the season, with Fletcher returning for the Thruxton meeting at the start of May.

Smith brings to the Redline Racing team a plethora of rear wheel drive racing experience, having previously contested the fiercely competitive Production BMW Championship. He has in fact been a double title winner in that series, taking the honours in 2009 and 2010.

Redline Racing’s new charge is hoping to use 2014 as a year to learn Porsche’s stunning new Type 991, 911 GT3 Cup car before embarking on a special 2015 season. “I want to get to know the Porsche before going endurance racing next season. I want to do the big 24-hour races, like Daytona and Spa.” Smith added.

The latest addition to the Carrera Cup of Great Britain grid first tested with his new team earlier this year, in preparation for the world famous Bathurst 12 Hours in Australia.

Following on from Donington Park this weekend, the next round of the series that Smith will contest will be the greatly anticipated 24 Hours of Le Mans support race in June. As he commented “To do Bathurst and Le Mans in a Porsche in the same season is pretty amazing.” Who would disagree with that?
