According to reports in a Spanish newspaper Andre Lotterer has turned down the opportunity to drive for Caterham at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix after it was announced that Roberto Merhi would be driving for the team in first practice.
Lotterer impressed many in Belgium before bad luck put him out of the race on lap one, and was due to return to driving duties but chose not to following an announcement by team principal Colin Kolles would be placing Merhi in the car for FP1 – something that Lotterer hadn’t agreed on.
The German explained that he is an F1 rookie himself and needs all of the track time possible so would be turning down the drive for this weekend.
Lotterer will return to WEC driving duties in a couple of weeks for Audi when the series heads to America and will be in action once again in the Super Formula series in Japan. It is currently not known if he will get any further F1 opportunities.
