Matteo Cairoli looks set to join the 2015 Porsche Mobil1 Supercup grid after emerging triumphant from the manufactures’ International Cup Scholarship challenge in spite of being the youngest contestant.
Cairoli was among nine candidates nominated by national Porsche Cup series’, to take part in the two day event in Valencia, Spain at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. Laps in the stunning Type 991 911 GT3 Cup car played only a small part, with both technical understanding and media assignments among the myriad challenges the drivers faced.
Cairoli was the youngest candidate and nominated from the Carrera Cup Italia. He has only two season’s motorsport experience. As most young drivers do, he began his career in single-seaters, testing a Formula Renault and then contesting the ATS Formula 3 Cup in 2013.
For 2014 he made what this author is sure will be recorded as a career defining decision, switching to GT competition in the form of the Carrera Cup Italia and also taking part in the Supercup race at Monza.
It feels fitting to conclude with the thoughts of a man that Porsche will be keen to see progress. Italy is a nation of passionate motorsport fans and to have such a talented member of said country competing for the company is not only a coup for the man himself but also the brand.
