Marklund Motorsport target team title in San Luis

2 Mins read

The VW-Marklund Motorsport squad are looking to secure the first ever FIA World Rallycross teams title at San Luis in Argentina which serves as the finale of this years championship, with the team and its drivers Anton Marklund and Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen working hard during the break since the last WorldRX round in Turkey.

VW-Marklund lead the Teams Title chase on 359 points from the Ford OlsbergsMSE team on 355 points with the Peugeot-Hansen squad also in with a shout on 320 points and to be sure of securing the title, the team have been testing some of their VW Polo Supercars near their base in Sweden whilst the Supercars of Marklund and Heikkinen have been shipped to Argentina.

“It’s been six and a half weeks since World RX of Turkey but that doesn’t mean we’ve sat back and relaxed,” said Marklund team principal Jan Marklund. “In fact it’s been just the opposite. We’ve been busy with testing and development work at our HQ in Sweden and we’ve already started our preparations for next season.”

He continued: “Argentina will be interesting and everybody knows its reputation as a motorsport country. We are committed to winning the teams’ title this year and secure Topi’s second place in drivers’ standings. Anton has a good chance to climb from his current sixth position so we have some unfinished business to do. This is a new team and we are proud to be supported by our partner Volkswagen. It would be a fantastic reward for everyone to win the teams’ title.”

Meanwhile Heikkinen is looking to secure 2nd position in the Drivers Championship behind 2014 Champion Petter Solberg and ahead of his Ford OlsbergsMSE rival Reinis Nitiss who lies 18 points behind the VW-Marklund driver.

“I don’t know anything about the track or the town itself but I really can’t wait for the race,” said Heikkinen. “I believe there will be a lot of people coming to see the season finale where my target is to keep second place in the drivers’ standings and help Marklund Motorsport achieve the teams’ title. We’re leading that competition outright for the first time this season and we’re not looking to give it away now.”

Anton Marklund lies in sixth position in the Driver Championship coming into the Argentina WorldRX Finale but admits that its the unknown element of the brand new San Luis circuit that intrigues him and tht the other teams and drivers will all arrive on a level playing field.

He said: “When it comes to the track it will be for everybody more or less a mystery. We don’t really know what to expect from it but I’m sure it will be a great fun. Argentina is a motorsport nation and they always know how to make good tracks and events.”

The final round of the 2014 FIA World Rallycross Championship, presented by Monster Energy takes place over the weekend of 28 – 30 November in San Luis, Argentina.
