After the revelation of Fernando Alonso’s twenty-place grid penalty following an engine change in Austria, news has come through that Jenson Button will also take a penalty for the same reason.
The McLaren-Honda team have elected to change the entire power unit in the back of Button’s car for the weekend at the Red Bull Ring, meaning the 2009 World Champion will have to drop an impossible twenty-five spots on the grid.
The Briton will therefore likely be forced to take a drive through penalty early in the race, just as he did in Montreal two weeks ago, with the same fate set to befall team-mate Alonso.
It is another disappointment for the McLaren team in 2015, who have only scored four points all year with Button’s eighth place finish in Monaco, while Alonso is on a run of three consecutive race retirements.
