Lady Luck seemed to elude the Bryan Herta Rallycross squad at the recent X Games event held at Austin, Texas.
The team makes its debut this year in the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship, fielding two M-Sport-built Ford Fiestas in the Supercar division of GRC for Patrik Sandell and Austin Dyne. Both drivers were looking good to reach the X Games Supercar Final when Lady Luck stepped in to bring their running to a halt.
Patrik Sandell managed to have a good day’s action on Friday and qualified the Kobalt Tools Ford Fiesta in Pole Position for his heat race. However a broken seal on the car resulted in a small oil leak just prior to the start of the heat race. The X Games race officials required the car to be removed from the grid and this set the team to work, frantically trying to get the car repaired to compete in the heat race. But the team ran out of time and Sandell would go no further.
“X Games didn’t really turn out how we wanted. But we again showed very good speed, and were one of the top teams fighting for the top positions whenever on track,” explained Sandell.
“We had a small oil leak from the gearbox, and they had us pull it off the track when we were on pole for our heat race. The BHR team fixed it very quickly, but due to the time window of the live TV we were not able to get back onto the track which was very very unfortunate. But I have a really good feeling going into Daytona. I’m more hungry than ever for a good result; especially since we’ve shown two weekends in a row that we have the speed to be able to win races. Hopefully we can put it all together down in Daytona and show everyone the Kobalt Tools car is the best!”
Austin Dyne qualified for the Last Chance Qualifier with an oppurtunity of taking his Castrol Ford Fiesta into the Final. However, contact during the LCQ meant that Dyne would not make it into the Final. But Dyne’s focus remains on Red Bull GRC and the following rounds in Daytona where he is certain the team will provide him with a race winning car.
“We were right where we needed to be to make the final if it wasn’t for getting taken out in the LCQ. We were in a position to advance, came to X Games and showed everyone we were fast and ready to race. The whole BHR team worked their butts off, and now we’re looking forward to Daytona…” explained Dyne.
Team Principal Bryan Herta was very pleased with the teams performance in its first X Games.
“I am incredibly proud of Austin, Patrik, and the BHR team for the effort they put forth these last two weeks. Two engine changes as well as battling multiple other isues with the cars put us on the back foot, but despite the challenges the driver and crew kept pushing and showed the potential for this team. I know that we will return to Daytona even stronger.”
The team now prepares for the next two rounds of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship that will take place at Daytona.
