Even before the weekend of Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s home race begins, the team are already on the back foot with the news that both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat will take grid penalties.
Both Red Bull drivers are switching to a fifth Renault power unit, with this move instantly incurring the grid penalties.
The team decided that as they are expecting a tough weekend in Austria with the track demanding a strong engine package, something Renault do not currently have compared to Mercedes or Ferrari, that it would be practical to switch to the new power unit at the Red Bull Ring.
The two Red Bull drivers are not alone with switching to fifth power units in Austria, with Fernando Alonso set for a penalty after it was revealed that the McLaren driver will switch to his fifth Honda power unit in Austria.
His McLaren team-mate Jenson Button could yet follow suit, with the team set to decide whether or not to change the Briton’s unit on Friday.
