Current Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship leader Dan Cammish is heading in to this weekend looking to make the most of the opportunity in front of thousands of fans and influential motor sport figures.
Cammish has taken six of eight wins in the national championship and would love to chalk up a win in the premiere Carrera Cup series as the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup heads to Silverstone.
“It’s going to be the biggest race of my career. I never dreamed that I’d be racing in support of Formula One. A couple of years ago I sat down with my family several times and we discussed where I’m heading and whether or not I should stop. It’s tough for a lot of racing drivers out there trying to go through the ranks. I was just like them; I had done well with certain aspects, struggled with others, but always raced at the front.
“I get the impression that it’s a minefield. It’s so tough, but to be given an opportunity this year by Nationwide and to have some of the people that are behind me now, it’s such a turnaround in my career. I’ve gone from being the underdog to being the guy that a lot of people are looking at. I get to race at my home Grand Prix which is absolutely amazing, and I couldn’t have dreamed of that a few years ago.”
The former Formula Ford champion is fully award of the opportunities this weekend brings.
“It puts me in the shop window as well, so to speak. It’s amazing how attaching the Porsche name to something suddenly gives it so much more credibility. I think this championship in particular has got lots of credibility, and I think that if you can race and do well in the Supercup, you’re going to be employed somewhere in the future because it’s just such a high level.”
