Fernando Alonso reflected on a painful weekend for the McLaren-Honda team after finishing down in a lapped thirteenth at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday after starting at the back of the grid.
The Spaniard admitted it was tough to be so far off the pace in Belgium, but felt getting both cars to the chequered flag was important, and admitted to having a bit of fun on the opening lap as he climbed from last to fourteenth, although he struggled to maintain that position for long.
“That was a tough race and a painful weekend: we simply weren’t competitive today,” reflected Alonso. “My only fun came at the start – to start 20th and be 14th at the end of the first lap was a good feeling.
“After that, our overall pace wasn’t good enough, but at least we got both cars to the finish, so hopefully we can learn a bit for the next race.
“That’s just the way things are at the moment. Monza will also be difficult, but I’m sure we’ll have some better races after that.”
