Sergio Perez: Renault was ‘a serious option’

1 Mins read

Sergio Perez has admitted moving to the Renault works team for 2016 was a serious option before deciding to commit his Formula 1 future with Sahara Force India.

Perez finally announced his plans on Thursday as he confirmed his contract with Force India had been extended for 2016. He had been heavily linked with joining Renault, who look ever more likely to be taking over the Lotus F1 Team at the end of this season, but the Mexican poured cold water on the reason that he chose Force India was because Renault had yet to announce its plans for 2016.

“No, it is nothing to do with that,” said Perez. “It was obviously a serious option but for me, I always made my mind clear, knowing the prospects of the team, knowing what we are doing behind the scenes. That’s why I always wanted to stay and I’m very happy to stay.

“You always listen to other options and offer. Renault, if they come, are a very attractive team, but I knew the best for me and the best place available was staying here.”
