FP2 cancelled at COTA due to heavy rain

1 Mins read

The FIA have decided to cancel Friday’s second practice at Circuit of The Americas due to terrible weather conditions at Austin.

With the arrival of lightning just before the start of Free Practice 2, it forced the start of the session to be delayed ‘indefinitely’ as marshals were unable to work with the fear of being hit by the lightning while on post.

A decision by the FIA to completely abandon the session was announced just before 3pm with the rain showing no sign of easing off, with the reason given being that the medical helicopter, that needs to be able to fly while a session is running in case of an accident, could not take off for another two hours.

This cancellation of FP2 could just be the start of an interrupted weekend at COTA with further bad weather predicted for Saturday. Qualifying may even have to be delayed or shifted to Sunday where weather conditions are expected to be better.
